GRA130: Type Trace Garamond and Baskerville

Can't say this was the most fun/creative project I've done, but certainly harder than you would think. Had to trace each letter from a sheet provided by the professor, make sure each letter is placed on a level line, manually set the kerning so that the characters flow together and then outline and/or fill in the letter. The hatching on "Garamond" was the most time consuming and the most intimidating one.

Pointillism project: Final Rough concept

Final rough concept for GRA170: Pointillism piece. I made the composition more dynamic by adding more chain aimed downwards as oppose to going just straight across and I added in chain fragments from the broken chain link to increase to feeling of movement in the composition. Next step: Full size on Tabloid paper.

Cheerleader character

Drew this one up awhile ago, forgot to upload it then. Better late than never, I guess.

This was my first attempt at this character. Not a bad attempt, but she didn't look young enough. Ideally, for a cheerleader, an ideal age is in the range of 16 to 19 years old. I wasn't getting that likeness from this character.

Second attempt. This one is more successful than the previous design. Larger eyes, longer lashes and a big smile really contribute to the young, peppy, cuteness deal you get with cheerleaders.

GRA130 - Letter Illustration

Thumbnail sketches of possible concepts.

More thumbnails...

Basically had two versions in mind. The first one is more of a rough, texture-based design of wood. The typeface I chose is called "Stencil". It's a typeface that you often see on wooden shipping crates. I'm kind of leaning towards this design as the stronger one, simply because of the wood texture and the depth created by the inner dark outline.

This design is a more solid, crisp, clean rendering. I drew inspiration from the emblems featured in the multiplayer mode for Modern Warfare 3 as well as the U.S. Delta Force emblem featured in the solo campaign.

First round of Graphic Design projects at Seneca College

Graphic Translation. Find an image of a person in a magazine that has good contrast between the background and the person. Make a trace of the image and simplify the character using positive and negative shapes, while still maintaining the structure of the person.

Final Product

Upside down drawing. Without a doubt the most interesting and challenging of the first week's assignments. Didn't know what to expect in terms of drawing technique, so I treated this drawing mostly like a partial blind contour drawing.

A work in progress...

Hoping to make this character look a bit "tougher". Looking forward to painting this character.

Year-in-Review and first post of 2012

Well, it's that time of year again. Hope you all had a happy new year! 2011 for me has been a great year for me. I graduated from the Digital Media Arts program at Seneca College with a 3.8 GPA. I landed my first internship as an independent web/graphic designer for Scoop Showroom. On top of that, I'll be starting my first semester  for Seneca's Graphic Design program on January 9 2012.

I'm really feeling good about 2012. With my experience in the DMA program, I'm really starting to feel like I'm honing in on my career. I'm hoping that the Graphic Design program will help me secure that choice, expand my knowledge of what I've experienced from the DMA program and maybe even broaden my skill sets. Bottom line is, I'm excited for the new year. I'm thinking I got some good times ahead of me.
