GRA180: Alphabetic Landscape

For our second to last project in Drawing class (GRA180), we had to choose a word from a list, for example: play, work or ride, or get a word approved by our professor. The word I chose is 'deter', which means to discourage someone from doing something through means of doubt, fear or intimidation. The idea of the project is to create an Illustration that helps define the word.

My first design was also my strongest design as seen by my professor and my classmates. This will be the one that gets refined for the final product. The idea of a person concealing their identity with something like a gas mask is a very unusual and intimidating thing to come across. The angry eyes add to the deterrence through emotion.

This is my second design. This one I find is rather ominous, yet still conveys a bold message. This design touches on deterrence through weapons and violence, something our society is all to familiar with.

Here's the final design, inked and cross-hatched. Canvas size: 6"x9.75" on a 12x18 canvas.

Oxymoron

For this assignment, we were given a list of oxymorons. We had to effectively illustrate both their means using only the type faces provided in the project specs. I chose "Futura" for "Loud" and "Bodoni" for "Whisper". The "black&condensed" weight for "Futura" allows the word to become more bold and recognizable, just like a loud noise. Making it bigger makes it's presence more emphatic. I used "Bodoni" for "Whisper" because the serifs are like little 'whisps'/strokes tapering off the letter, like a person whispering. Also, serif fonts are more personalized than sans serif fonts. So using Bodoni makes "Whisper" seem more personal, like someone whispering something in your ear.

Cylinders in Perspective

Man, it's been a while since I've drawn objects in perspective. Really takes me back to when I was in the Art Fundamentals program as an 18 year old who had absolutely no idea how to draw much of anything. Not a big fan of cross hatching, unfortunately.

Zombie face

Found a cool looking zombie illustration online. Made a trace of it and shaded it myself. Mainly looking to test my shading/replicating skills on this one.

Contrast project GRA 170

For this project, I was given a list of antonyms. My task was to illustrate 16 of those antonyms using a typeface that we have studied this semester (Bodoni, Baskerville, Garamond, Rockwell, Helvetica etc.) and pick a single letter, number or symbol from which ever font you've selected. I chose Bodoni as my font and the number '2' as my character. Bodoni is a very well designed font; I like the positive/negative space created particularly by the '2'. Here's my layout of the 16 illustrations.

Rough Concepts

Final product
The critique went quite well for my particular piece. None of the illustrations needed to be seriously re-done, just a few minor changes here and there.
Some of my favourite ones are the: large/small, concave/convex, beginning/ending, plain/decorative(especially) and subtle/coarse.

Surfer Girl

Found this image online. I really liked it, so I thought it'd be cool to draw it out for myself.
Still a work in progress. Got the pose down. Threw in my own twist when creating the character's likeness. I'll add in the flowers in Illustrator. Pretty sure there's an option for that.
