Initial layouts/designs for the "modern" or Didone type families. I chose Bodoni, Didot and ITC Fenice for my brochure designs.
This is my production blog. Everything done in my Graphic Design program, my Digital Media Arts Program, past work I've done in Art Fundamentals and personal projects will be posted here. Take a look around and enjoy!

GRA230: Typography Book cover
For this assignment, we were to design a book cover for a novel from a selected list. I chose the book 'Slaughterhouse 5'. It's a story about a U.S. soldier who gets captured by German soldiers and imprisoned in a disused slaughter titled "Slaughterhouse 5". Synopsis here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slaughterhouse-Five
We had to design 5 covers as rough concepts and then choose the best design and refine it as our final cover.

Final Concept:
I like the Stencil typeface because it reminds me of the way military units would mark crates for rations, medicine and weapons, given the fact that this book is set during WW2, I figured that typeface would be appropriate. The deep red is a very eye-catching colour, it shows the aggressive, gory nature of the book. The red to black gradient symbolizes the "out of body" experiences the main character has during the story; believing he travels backwards and forwards in time, jumping to all these different scenes including being abducted by aliens to a docile, post-war lifestyle.

GRA230: Phrases Project
So for my typography 2 course in Graphic Design, we were given a list of 5 phrases: Baggy Jeans, Born to Be Wild, Jumbo Copies, Revolution and Whisper Stutter Shout. Choose 3 of those phrases and set them in 5 different typefaces, ones that convey the meaning of each phrase.

GRA130: Final Project
Our final exam project is to build a 2 page document about a typeface we selected at random. I ended up getting "Century" as my typeface. The first page was mainly just research about the typeface (designer, year, characteristics etc.) The second page allowed for more creativity such as setting the type as a headline, building a positive/negative composition and making a face using font characters, which I found to be the most interesting

GRA130: Type Trace 2
Round two with the type tracing. This one took a little less time because I was able to set the kerning via InDesign as oppose to setting it by hand. This trace, I feel, went better than my last attempt.

GRA130: Type Trace Garamond and Baskerville
Can't say this was the most fun/creative project I've done, but certainly harder than you would think. Had to trace each letter from a sheet provided by the professor, make sure each letter is placed on a level line, manually set the kerning so that the characters flow together and then outline and/or fill in the letter. The hatching on "Garamond" was the most time consuming and the most intimidating one.

Typography: Enhanced lyrics piece 1 of 3

This is 1 of 3 of the enhanced typography compositions. The job as to take a section of lyrics from a song, a poem or a quotation and enhance it typographically. The lyrics I ended up choosing were the "Enter Sandman" lyrics by Metallica. The lyrics are very descriptive and kind of freaky, so manipulating them won't be that difficult. It's also the song that got into liking Metallica's music. For this piece, I only maniplated certain words to help emphasis the type and what it is depicting. For example: the word "war" has blood spatter on it to show that war is gory, violent and bloody.

Web Type faces cube

Since most of us, including myself, epicly FAILED the first type cube, Richard was nice enough to let us redo the type cube assignment. The only difference was we had to replace 4 of the type faces with one's used on the web. Here's the finished product, here's hoping I don't fuck this one up...

Typography Cube
This assignment was given in my New Media Design class. We looked at the 6 major type faces: Sans Serif, Serif, Decorative, Woodcut, Slab Serif and Script. We then needed to choose a font from each of the 6 type faces and give it a section on the cube. We then had to type our intials in a coloured box in the designated typeface. This cube was made using Adobe Illustrator CS5 and Adobe Photoshop CS5.
